The HVAC system in most Southern Maryland homes consists of a gas or oil furnace and a separate air conditioner. Using gas or oil takes advantage of the large efficiency gains and cost savings fuel based heat has over electric heat. A standalone air conditioner operates slightly more efficiently than a heat pump system in cooling mode. In some older homes, a permanent air conditioning system may not have been installed.

Southern Maryland – Tri-County Region

Southern Maryland is composed of the state's southernmost counties on the "Western Shore" of the Chesapeake Bay. It includes all of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties and southern portions of Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties.


Southern Maryland was originally inhabited by Piscataway Indians. During 1608 and 1609, Captain John Smith explored this area. St. Mary's City, at southern Maryland's lower tip, was Maryland's first colonial settlement. It was also the first Roman Catholic English settlement in North America. About two-thirds of St. Mary's College of Maryland's campus is a large living history museum and archaeological research area.

Things to Do

Historic St. Mary's City: See the reconstruction of the tall ship, Dove. The Dove brought the first European settlers to Maryland in 1634. You'll also be able to tour the 17th-century plantation and visit an ongoing archaeological dig.

Tour the former home of Samuel A. Mudd in Waldorf, Maryland. John Wilkes Booth fled to Southern Maryland after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln. Dr. Mudd treated Booth's broken leg.

The Calvert Marine Museum is a great place to take your family. You'll will be able to touch a live skate or ray, see the 35-foot-long Megalodon Shark skeleton, and visit the woodworking shop to see the craftsmanship of Chesapeake boat builders.

Visit Southern Maryland Wineries along the Patuxent Trail offer beautiful water views and spectacular wines that compare to the Tuscany region.

Go to Regency Furniture Stadium to catch a Blue Crabs baseball game.

Soutterley Plantation is a great place to visit for wine tastings, concerts and other events. It's a beautiful plantation on the Patuxent River. George Washington once stopped there. You'll get a glimpse of buildings dating back over 300 years.

Civil War History buffs can spend a day where the Potomac meets the Bay ... at Point Lookout State Park. It's been called the most haunted place in America. There is also a beautiful lighthouse to tour and if you like fishing, there are some great catches to be made.

If you're a Motocross fan, watch a race at Budds Creek. Budds Creek Motocross Park is home to the AMA Nationals, three World Championships. There's racing nearly every weekend during the summer.
