How to Remove Mold from Your Heat Pump

Your heat pump is on the outside of your home and is exposed to a build-up of mold. Mold can be a threat to the health and well-being of you and your family.

What are the dangers of mold exposure?

Mold can cause a variety of health problems including nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, and various cold and flu-like symptoms. If you have mold allergies, you could suffer from more serious health problems, including chronic lung diseases and lung infection.

A heat pump contaminated with mold will pump mold through the duct work of your home. Mold growth throughout your HVAC system can become a serious problem throughout your home.

How Mold Grows in a Heat Pump

Because heat pumps draw air to provide heating and cooling, they become susceptible to moisture buildup, especially during the wet seasons … spring and winter. Even though each unit has a filter to prevent excessive moisture and mold growth, filters will become clogged with mold.

To find and eliminate mold build-up, inspect your heat pump and its filters to confirm that they’re mold-free.

I have mold, so how do I get rid of it?

Start by turning off your heat pump. Put on an N-95 respirator (mask purchased from a hardware store or an online shop) to prevent inhalation of mold.

  • Open up your heat pump and inspect the filter or insulation for dampness and mold.

  • Remove any damp filters or insulation. Place and seal filters or insulation in a plastic bag.

  • Remove water in the pump with a wet vacuum and use towels to dry the inside of the heat pump.

  • Apply a mold cleaner directly to the heat pump interior and wipe the moldy surfaces with a clean cloth.

  • Hand-dry every component again before installing new filters and insulation.

Because mold can spread through your ductwork, you should also have it professionally cleaned.
